Holi Festival in India 2019 | Best Indian Festivals: The Holi festival memorializes the victory of good over the demon, especially the flaming and devastation of an asura named Holika. This was made possible with the help of Hindu god of conservation, Lord Vishnu.

Holi got its name as the Dola Jatra from the childhood jester of Lord Krishna, a spiritual rebirth of God Vishnu, who liked to play jokes on the village girls by soaking them in water and colors. In various parts of India, Holi is celebrated as a spring festival to provide Thanksgiving for an ample crop season.

When is Holi festival celebrated?

Every state celebrates Holi in their own way as per their ritual. Usually, the solemnization starts with the Holika balefire on the previous evening of Holi where people assemble together and enjoy the eve by dancing and singing around the balefire and worship for their family and loved ones. On the day of Holi, people begin to celebrate the festival with colors.

On this day, people usually spend the day demonizing colored powder all over each other’s faces putting colored water at each other and having parties, dancing underwater sprayings.

What Rituals are performed?

The accentuation of Holi rituals is on the flaming of evil Holika. On the eve of Holi, massive balefire is illuminated to mark the occasion which is known as Holika Dahan. As well, conducting a special puja, singing and dancing around the fire, and walk around it three times.

In some parts of the country, people even walk across the hot coals of the fire. However, such fire-walking is considered to be holy. This happens only in one place that is Saras Village near Surat in Gujarat.
