Lake Pichola Tour Details

Lake Pichola, situated in Udaipur city in the Indian state of Rajasthan, is an artificial fresh water lake, created in the year 1362 AD, named after the nearby Picholi village.[1][2] It is one of the several contiguous lakes, and developed over the last few centuries in and around the famous Udaipur city. The lakes around Udaipur were primarily created by building dams to meet the drinking water and irrigation needs of the city and its neighborhood. Two islands, Jag Niwas and Jag Mandir are located within Pichola Lake, and have been developed with several palaces to provide views of the lake.[1][3]

There are four islands on the lake:

  • Jag Niwas, where the Lake Palace is built.
  • Jag Mandir, with the palace of the same name.
  • Mohan Mandir, from where the king would watch the annual Gangaur festival celebration.
  • Arsi Vilas, small island which was an ammunition depot, but also a small palace. This one was built by one of the maharanas of Udaipur to enjoy the sunset on the lake. It is also a sanctuary catering to a variety of birds, including tufted ducks, coots, egrets, terns, cormorants and kingfishers.[4]
Three of the numerous lakes found in the vicinity of Udaipur which connect with the Pichola lake and the Saroop Sagar Lake connected by an arched bridge built by Maharana Swaroop Singh (1842-1861) which in turn connects to the Fateh Sagar Lake, the crystal watered lake in the midst of tree lined hills and the smaller Arsi vilas.

Departure & Return Location

Lake Pichola

Lake Pichola Highlight
  • Lake Pichola was created by a tribesman Picchu Banjara, and it is the oldest lake of Udaipur during the period of Maharana Lakha’s rule.
  • The lake has a width of 2 miles, length of 3 miles, and a depth of 30 feet.
  • Maharana Udai Singh enlarged the lake by having constructed a dam at the Badipol shore, and he also developed the city of Udaipur on the banks of the lake due to its sheer beauty.
  • Lake Pichola is best known for the splendid architecture done by the Maharanas of Mewar on the several islands, and the many ghats situated at the shores.
  • A tightrope walker Natini was challenged by Maharana Jawan Singh, who offered her half the kingdom of Mewar to tightrope across Lake Pichola. The legend states that Natini was tricked and the rope was cut off mid-way, which led to her death, but not before she is said to have cursed Maharana Jawan Singh’s family of not having any direct descendants. The curse is believed to have come true since six of the Maharana’s sons were adopted.
  • Lake Pichola has also spent ample amount of time being dry during elongated periods of low rainfall.

Took a ferry on this lake from the Trident to the Leela. The Lake was full so it added to the beauty. There is a ferry ride for around 45 – 60 minutes that takes you around the key sights on the lake. I missed it, but believe it’s worth to soak in the sights.

We ended up taking a sunset boat ride on the lake and had a great time. It was wonderful watching the locals swimming in the clean water, a rarity in India. A highlight of the trip was watching a swarm of bats fishing in the lake.

In middle of the lake, famous, prestigious, and Luxurious Hotel Taj Lake Palace is situated, where you have to take a boat to go. Boating is permitted in this lake but the cost is a bit high.
